Tips for Finding a Qualified Bookkeeper

Hey Jennifer,
We've been trying to find a bookkeeper for quite a while it seems like everyone we've attempted to work with can talk a great talk but yet they seem to know as little as I do once they get in the door. How do we figure out if they actually know what they're doing BEFORE we hire them? Other than a Quickbooks user test.. even I can pass that one.
Dawn.

  1. Well Dawn that's a Great question!
Well one thing we deal with now is so many people are unemployed so many of those folks have decided to start their own Bookkeeping service when they really have no business representing themselves that way.
So, one thing I found to let you know immediately if you have a real bookkeeper or someone just trying to get by is the Financials Test.
If you dont have one- see if your CPA can give you one. (you can always white out the co name if it's not yours)
Give them a copy of an Income Statement and a Balance sheet with obvious errors. If they cant point out areas of concern.. then show them the door.. They're Not legit.
